Winter Olympics

T-Rex’s, Bison and Moose!

I was commissioned by Michael Curry Design to sculpt a large Moose head, a large Bison head and two massive T-Rex skulls for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City, Utah back in 2001/2002.

  • The finished T-Rex heads each weighed under 25 pounds even though the were 21 feet long and almost 11 feet tall! Wind loads were major concerns since the live event took place outside and in and over the audience.

  • The Moose and Bison heads were made of hand bent and welded steel rod with a semi-translucent stretch fabric pulled over them.

The T-Rex skulls were sculpted from blocks of EPS (styrene) foam and then cast in carbon fiber, as the finished products had to be extremely lightweight to be operable on the giant boom lifts that held the performers who ‘puppeteered’ them.
