Line.Plane.Object.

The LODGE collective in practice

Line.Plane.Object. was a temporary art/design installation project in Portland, OR completed by LODGE, a multidisciplinary design collaborative. This was a live, performance-based and evolving design installation which grew over 3 years. The designers met onsite for studio hours to sketch, prototype, test, and install each phase of the design process. This was all done surrounded by one of the busiest intersections in Portland, the Burnside bridgehead couplet.

The original RFP called for an approach that would engage the construction fences that circled the site. Our initial thinking was to stretch the idea of what a ‘fence’ means.

This was a live, performance-based and evolving design installation which grew over 3 years, and the designers met onsite for studio hours to sketch, prototype, test, and install each phase of the design process

However, when the multiple managing bodies of this project finally aligned, and had permits in hand, the construction phase was over and the construction fences had been removed. So, we adapted the visual language we had developed (which mainly references construction fence details), and set out on a new journey.

The new goal for this project shifted from reinterpreting a construction fence to instead showcase the creative process. LODGE set out to highlight each step, from ideation and sketching (LINE), to form development and gestural gestalt (PLANE), to final production, assembly and function (OBJECT). Materials and stencils suggested details found on many construction fences around the world. We popped out the shapes that are CNC’d through the panels at the end of the project to create bespoke pieces of furniture that had story built into them.
