Scream Awards

In 2008, Michael Curry hired me to help create a giant, fire-breathing dragon for an awards show that looked "super dangerous and made of twisted metal". The producers wanted the award presenters to be able to walk through the open mouth and onto the stage. Froma scale model, I bent and welded steel tubing to create a skeleton, atop which I tacked on expanded metal to create a gnarly skin layer. Silver leaf, patina’s and paint completed the look.

If you look closely, you can see barbell weights at the far back of the dragons mouth in this photo. A union stagehand is testing the mouth open feature. I had to play with the weights and garage door springs until I got it to where the mouth could be opened pretty easily by a single person.
